Mortenson was selected in September 2016 to lead the development of Discovery Square. The launch of Discovery Square is a key milestone for the Destination Medical Center, the largest public-private partnership in Minnesota state history. The groundbreaking for Phase 1 was in November 2017 and the facility officially opened in June of 2019.

Phase 1 of Discovery Square includes an 81,000 rentable square foot bioscience building with approximately 150 surface parking stalls. Joining Mayo will be the University of Minnesota Rochester, Epic Systems Corporation, a café, and a variety of other bioscience private sector partners.
